Techniques

This is where the rubber hits the road. There will be basic and advanced instructions as well as craft-specific patterns in this section. It will be broken down according to these categories: sewing and quilting, crochet, knitting, woodwork, weaving, beading, metalwork, ceramics, needlework, and paperwork. I know that last one sounds funny. No, I’m not going to be talking about filling out forms; paperwork will include scrapbooking, origami and paper filigree...stuff like that.

Craft techniques will be rated according to the following scale.

Ease of Mastery (Scale of 1 to 5) How difficult is it to master the craft? So how do most people learn it?

  1. Learned it as a child at camp and never had to relearn it.
  2. Learned it easily from Grandma.
  3. Learned it from a book.
  4. Learned it from a class, and it took a couple of weekends.
  5. Learned it from a semester college course and some of it still didn't stick in your head.

Start-up Costs (Scale of $ to $$$$$) How much money do you have to spend to get started?

  • $ less than twenty
  • $$ $20 to $40
  • $$$ $40 to $80
  • $$$$ $80 to $100
  • $$$$$ over $100

Long-term Costs (Scale of $ to $$$$$) How much money do you have to spend after you have bought all the basic equipment?

  • $ less than twenty
  • $$ $20 to $40
  • $$$ $40 to $80
  • $$$$ $80 to $100
  • $$$$$ over $100

Challenge past learning (Scale of 1 to 5) Once you have mastered the basics are there ways to challenge yourself?

Usefulness (Scale of 1 to 5) Can you make things are not simply decorative? Jewelry does not count.

Wow factor (Scale of 1 to 5) Are you and your mother the only people who will love your creations?

Frustration Level (Scale of 1 to 5) Can you sit and watch TV at the same time? So, portability is a part of this scale.

So for crafters who have never tried a particular craft and are curious, you have an idea of what it will take to get started.
