In your Easter bonnet...

For an Easter craft activity, I had the girls (my daughter and her friends) decorate straw hats...and yes, I played the song "Easter Parade" too many times. It was great. It was one of those craft projects that has the potential to keep going and can be used for other occasions. Everyone wore their hats, but not only that they can wear them all summer long or hang them up on the wall as a decoration. But it could also work as an activity for a bridal shower, especially for a spring wedding.

You can get the skimmer hats at Oriental Trading Company (type the code number IN-15/376 in the search box, ad is below).

So, here's what I mean...

This is painted with black gloss paint. It has a shear yellow ribbon and a fabric sunflower and leaves. I don't know what it is about the color black and sunflowers, they go well together. I was thinking a big pink daisy would work well here, too, but I didn't have one that was big enough.

This hat was left unpainted and has a satin, wire ribbon. I used a yard of ribbon here because of the double bow.

Is this too much tulle? I don't care, I still like it. I think I used two yards of tulle. It was a strip of six inches that was scrunched up for the hat band.

This is painted in navy blue matte paint. It has a navy blue and white stripe, grosgrain ribbon hat band. It also has a big white fabric dahlia and leaves on the side, instead of the back.

What you need:
  • straw hats
  • ribbon or tulle
  • fabric flowers
  • glue gun or good fabric glue
  • acrylic paint, optional
What to do:
  • Paint your hats. This does get messy, so put down newspaper and wear aprons. The straw hats really eat up alot of paint so be sure to have a full 2 oz. bottle per hat. You may need to do two coats, especially with a gloss paint. Do this ahead of time so it can dry before it is decorated.
  • Pick out matching ribbon or tulle for a hat band. Tie it on or glue it on with the glue gun, please be careful.
  • Glue on fabric flowers.

What we learned from this project:
  • Inexpensive straw hats can be dressed up easily with ribbon and fabric flowers; this makes a great group activity.
  • Straw hats can be painted with acrylic paints, but with glossy paints the hat will need two coats.
  • Hats make a great wall decoration.
