Three Is a Magic Number

Don't ask me why, but the number three seems to work well in crafting. Take for instance this hat.



First there is the base, the hat itself. Then there is 1 the hat band, 2 the leaves, and then 3 the dahlia. Take away one element and the entire unit suffers. Here's an excellent but simple article on this rule.

I don't think it's a good idea to stick to this rule without thinking, but when something isn't working it's a good thing to consider.
