Crocheted Wire Ribbon Basket

crocheted ribbon basket

This basket is crocheted using really thick, 3 inch wide, wire ribbon. I used a sheer, off-white ribbon. It looks great filled with little pink rose buds. You could use a small plastic liner bowl to put in a wet frog and then perfectly arrange your rosebuds in it. It took a while to figure out what size crochet hook I used since it isn’t labeled. It’s a Q size, but you could use the largest hook you have as long as the gauge is one stitch per inch. Yes, that is correct; one single crochet stitch is a whole inch. The basket measures 5” wide and 6” in height. It is somewhat small, so it would be ideal for a flower girl in a wedding.

Tip: Leave the ribbon on the spool while crocheting.

Tip: Embellishments, ribbon roses on sides and bow, are optional.

Tip: Be sure to use wire ribbon. This will give shape to the basket.

Materials

25 yards, 3” wide wire ribbon

Size Q crochet hook

Needle and thread for rose embellishments

Scissors

Directions

Round 1: Ch 2, join with sl st in first ch to form ring. 6 sc in ring join with sl st.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st of previous round. Join with sl st.

Round 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st of previous round, back loop only for shaping. Join with sl st.

Round 4: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st of previous round, both loops. Join with sl st. Repeat one more round.

Handle: Ch 7 to opposite side of basket. Sc in each ch. Finish off.

Ribbon roses: Fold 18” of ribbon in half. With needle and thread do a running stitch along the wired edge. Do not knot end. Begin to roll end of ribbon, pulling the thread and gathering the ribbon into a rose shape. Make another. When finished, knot end of thread and sew to both sides of basket.

Tie a big bow at the top.
