Somewhere beyond the sea...

This project represents a "cold" method of metalwork and the use of aluminum. When I got this assignment we were told by my metalwork instructor to be a little crazy. Since it is aluminum it didn't call for a classic, straight-laced style. She was quite proud of the fact that we were going to use aluminum to craft jewelry (yes, it has a pinback), a material that we usually use and then discard. It was nice working with it. It was quite easy to saw through it. Texturing it was fun. Riveting it together was not difficult. I'm not sure I would do something like this again...But now I'm in the mood to reuse the skills I learned here and saw through some aluminum.

What you need:
  • small sheets of color coated aluminum, 18 gauge
  • a jeweler's saw and blades
  • rivets
  • hammer
  • paper and pencil
What to do:
  • Draw your design on paper.
  • Trace the parts onto the aluminum with a sharp tool.
  • Cut out the pieces with the saw.
  • Texture the pieces.
  • Rivet the pieces together.
